Guide

How to remove unauthorized sellers on Amazon (and keep them gone).

Short answer: Amazon acts on fakes and IP problems, not on low prices. To keep sellers gone, you have to cut off their supply, and the lasting fix is having one seller on your listing.

Know who you’re dealing with

3 kinds of unauthorized sellers.

Fakes

Knock-offs sold under your name. Report them through Brand Registry with a test buy as proof. Amazon’s Transparency codes can stop them from shipping at all.

Drop-shippers

They hold no stock and buy from another store when an order comes in. They often win the click anyway. Letters usually work, since they have little to lose by leaving.

Discounters with real stock

They bought your product somewhere and sell it cheap. Reports won’t remove them. Find the supply, then use your resale policy and agreements.

The steps

6 steps you can start today.

Step 1

Find every seller.

Open each of your listings and look at the other sellers. Write down each name, price, and whether Amazon ships it (FBA) or the seller does. Check a few storefronts to see what else they sell.

Step 2

Sort them into 3 kinds.

Fakes, drop-shippers with no stock, and sellers with your real product at a low price. Each one needs a different fix, so don’t treat them the same.

Step 3

Report what Amazon acts on.

Fakes, trademark misuse, and copied photos or text go through Brand Registry’s Report a Violation. Do a test buy first so you have proof. Amazon won’t act on low prices.

Step 4

Cut off the supply.

Find out where the real stock comes from: a distributor, a retailer, or liquidation. Add reseller and MAP terms to your agreements so your own buyers can’t feed Amazon sellers.

Step 5

Post a resale policy and send letters.

A resale policy on your website sets the rules for who can resell. Then send each seller a letter: soft first, then firmer. Many leave after the first one.

Step 6

Keep watching.

Check your listings every week. New sellers show up after big sales events and when stock gets liquidated.

One thing not to do: don’t add your own offer to a listing just to report a seller. If Amazon flags that listing, every seller on it can take the hit, including you.

Why reports aren’t enough

Brand Registry helps. It doesn’t stop resellers.

Brand Registry lets you report fakes and copied content, and gives you more control of your listing. But in the US, reselling genuine product is usually legal. So a seller with your real stock stays unless their supply runs dry, and new ones keep showing up while it doesn’t.

Proof

What it looks like when it works.

At CanCor, a cat toy maker, 14 unauthorized sellers, some selling knock-offs under its name, were gone within 30 days. At SwissMicros, 6 drop-shippers with no stock were gone within 60 days.

Unauthorized sellers FAQ

Someone is selling my product on Amazon. What can I do?

First find out what they sell. Fakes and copied photos or text can be reported through Brand Registry, and Amazon acts on those. A seller with your real product is harder: a report alone usually won’t remove them. You need to find where their stock comes from, put a resale policy in place, and send letters. The lasting fix is having one seller on the listing.

Can Amazon remove a seller for selling below my price?

No. Amazon does not enforce your MAP or remove sellers for low prices. MAP is a deal between you and your resellers, so you enforce it with your own policy and agreements.

Is it legal to resell my product on Amazon?

In the US, reselling genuine product someone bought is usually legal (the first sale rule). That’s why Amazon won’t remove a seller just because you didn’t approve them. Fakes, trademark misuse and copied content are different. Talk to a lawyer about your own case.

What is Amazon Brand Registry?

Amazon’s free program for brand owners with a registered or pending trademark. It gives you more control of your listings, tools to report fakes and copied content, and brand features like A+ content and Brand Analytics. It does not remove sellers of your genuine product.

Does Brand Registry stop resellers?

Not on its own. It gives you tools to report fakes and IP problems and more control of your listing content. It does not stop someone reselling your real product.

How do I report a seller selling fakes of my brand?

Do a test buy, keep the order and photos, then use Report a Violation in Brand Registry. Pick counterfeit, and include the proof from your test buy.

Why do the same sellers keep coming back?

Because their supply is still open. If a distributor or retailer keeps selling them stock, they will be back on your listing within weeks. Close the supply and they run out.

How long does it take to get rid of them?

In our two published cases it took 30 days (14 sellers) and 60 days (6 sellers). It depends on how many there are and where their stock comes from. New sellers can show up later, so someone has to keep watching.
